Digital Retro Park - Museum on a Cart

Während der Corona-Zeit musste der Digital Retro Park leider fast durchgängig geschlossen bleiben, was bei allen Beteiligten – uns als Betreiber des Museums und natürlich auch bei euch als unsere Besucher – für einigen Unmut gesorgt hat. Ganz davon abgesehen, dass unser Überleben davon abhängt, dass wir Besucher und Gönner für unser Museum begeistern können.

In dieser Situation hat unser Mitglied Falk eine seiner schon länger gehegten Ideen umgesetzt. Wenn die Leute nicht zum Museum können, dann kommt das Museum eben zu Ihnen! Und was wäre thematisch besser passend, als ein stilsicheres echtes physisches Medium für den erfolgreichsten Handheld aller Zeiten – den Nintendo Game Boy?

Der Spieler kann sich im virtuellen Museum frei bewegen und die Ausstellung bestaunen und mit einigen der Vereinsmitgliedern sprechen. Es ist quasi die 8-bit Umsetzung eines echten Museumsbesuches – mit dem einzigen Unterschied, dass die einzelnen Exponate in der Umsetzung nicht selbst gespielt werden können – im Gegensatz zum echten Museum.

Die ganze Entwicklung fand mit Hilfe des genialen GB Studio statt, welche es ermöglicht, neue Software für den Game Boy zu erstellen.

Nach etlichen Wochen Entwicklung, Testen, Bugfixen und noch mehr Testen und Bugfixen und immer weiteren Ideen für versteckte Überraschungen – ganz zu schweigen von immer besserer musikalischer Untermalung dank Tronimal – ist die Entwicklungszeit nun endlich zu Ende gegangen und wir haben das Museum auf echten Cartridges herausgebracht (es sind auch noch welche erhältlich) !

Da aber nicht jeder seinen echten Game Boy benutzen möchte - oder gar keinen hat - wurde der Wunsch an uns herangetragen, das Museum on a Cart auch als Datei für Emulatoren zur Verfügung zu stellen, was wir hiermit tun.

Der komplette Erlös fließt in die Fixkosten des Digital Retro Park Museums und hilft uns, die Türen für unsere Besucher offen zu halten!

The Digital Retro Park had to be closed down pretty much all through the Corona pandemic. Obviously this put all of us – the staff running the museum and the visitors under quite some stress. Not to mention that our very survival in dependant on the patronage of the visitors and other friends of the museum, who helped us out immensively during this hard time.

In this situation Falk, one of our members, brought one of his old ideas to fruit: If the people can not come to the museum, then the museum has to come to them! And what would thematically more fitting then a real physical piece of hardware for the most succesful handheld console of all times – the Nintendo Game Boy?

In the virtual museum the player can move freely in the museum and marvel at the exhibition and talk to some of the club members. It is practically the 8-bit implementation of a real museum visit – with the only difference that the individual exhibits cannot be played – in contrast to the real museum where (almost) every device can be touched, tried out and played.

The whole development was done with the help of the awesome GB Studio which enables the creation of software for the Game Boy.

After many weeks of Development, testing, bugfixing and more testing and more bugfixing and always new and additional ideas for hidden easter eggs – not to mention the always improving musical score made by Tronimal – the development cycle has finally ended and we made the cartridges available (some are still available for purchase)!

Since not everyone wanted to use their old Game Boy - or even *gasp* do not even own one - we were asked to provide an option to get the Museum on a Cart as a file for emulators. And here we are! 

All proceeds are directly going into the running costs of the Digital Retro Park museum and help us to keep the doors open!
